Usage of Carboplatin:Carboplatin is a chemotherapy drug used against some forms of cancer. It is mainly used for the treatment of ovarian carcinoma, lung, head and neck cancers. Carboplatin was introduced in the late 1980s and has since gained popularity in clinical treatment due to its vastly reduced side-effects compared to its parent compound Cisplatin. Carboplatin belongs to the platinum-based antineoplastic agents group.
One of the greatest benefits of Carboplatin to Cisplatin, is its reduced side effects. In particular the elimination of Nephrotoxic effects. Other reduced side effects are related to Nausea and vomiting, they are less severe and more easily controlled. Carboplatin is one of the most widely used chemotherapy medicines. Carboplatin differs from Cisplatin by having a bigger molecule, with a dicarboxylate ligand. This slows the metabolic breakdown of the material, what causes the Carboplatin to stay in the body much longer and reduces the rate of formation of toxic by-products.
Carboplatin is approved for clinical use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For treating patients with ovarian and non-small cell lung cancer.
